Who makes Vggie and why did we build this?

As vegetarians we had far too much personal experience with the typical restaurant search. The endless searching through google. The vegetarian restaurant listing sites that look like they were built in the 90’s. And the walking and driving through neighborhoods looking for vegetarian restaurants.

That’s why we built vggie.com. The largest, most complete search and discovery tool for vegetarian restaurants.

Our mission

Our mission is to promote vegetarianism and veganism around the world.

There are so many reasons why we want to do this. To name a few..

We want to do our part to reduce pollution. Besides CO2 there is another greenhouse gas that is responsible for global warming: Methane. Animal agriculture is the single largest source for methane emissions. Also huge amounts of water are being used for growing crops to feed these animals and for processing the meat.

We want to reduce famine. At least 70% of grains are produced to feed animals raised for slaughter. To get 1kg of beef we need 7kg grain, this is a waste of food. If we would all change our lifestyle and eat less meat there would be more food available for direct human consumption.

We believe in animal rights. Most animals raised for slaughter are crammed into windowless, overcrowded cages where they can barely turn or take a single step for their entire lives. Most of these animals are mutilated without painkillers and won’t get veterinary care. Animals are not ours to use for food, clothing, experimenting, etc..

We want to have a healthy lifestyle. Eating less meat reduces the risk of cancer and prevents heart disease. This will also help you eat less saturated fats and less cholesterol.

We want to do this by making non-vegetarian restaurants be more aware of our needs and providing fast and easy ways to find the restaurants that make a genuine effort to do so. We also want to build an active vegetarian and vegan community so that it will be easier to connect with other like-minded people.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
